Article 109 weeds and crappie How Do they relate?

Crappie are not built for speed or power and they like to stay close to shallow water for there is plenty of structure and where most of their crappie food is located. The food chain will be the thickest where plankton is the thickest, which normally is located in large flats and bays on the wind ward side. crappie will be called names such as calico bass, speckled bass, speckled perch, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass and papermouth. You can use crappie baits like crappie jigs tipped with soft plastic grubs and wax worms. Crappie live baits like crappie minnows, shiners, small gizzard shad, maggots, panfish leeches, and crayfish will work well too.

The speckled bass will relate to weeds in different ways. When you are crappie fishing in lakes and reservoirs that have large areas of weedy vegetation, look for suspended crappies any where from 5 to 15ft of the bottom in 25 to 30 feet of water. The The speckled perch will suspend off a drop off lip in the bottom contour during the middle of the day and when there is direct sunlight they will suspend there too.The papermouth will also suspend at drop off points during cold front conditions when the fish are in a negative feeding pattern. To entice the paper mouth which are in a neutral or negative feeding mood you can use popular crappie fishing jigs such as the Flu Flu, Chubby Jig, Puddle Jumper, Zetabait Wobbly Eye Jig, Custom Jigs & Spin Shrimpo, Blue Fox Foxee Jig, and the Lindy – Little Joe Timber Jig tipped with crappie live baits such as wax worms, maggots, crappie minnows, shiners, redworms, live nymphs, or crayfish. To ad some flash for even more attraction add a safety pin spinner to your crappie jig, or switch up your crappie bait to one to a popular crappie spinner bait such as a Blakemore Road Runner, Tad’s Cricket Spin,Terminator Tiny T, and the Bomber Mini – Whacker. To catch crappie you may want to verticle jig your crappie spinner baits to a vertical or horizontal depth that is eye level to thewhite perch.

The paper mouth will many times suspend at the bottom edge of beds at the base when they are in a active feeding mood. Under favorable weather conditions there will be entire schools of  papermouth that will locate here as long as the crappie food lasts. During heavy feeding periods a regular crappie jig with a plastic grub will catch crappie. This concentration of crappie will normally occur in the late afternoon.

Schools of calico bass that were suspended along the base of weed edge lines will many times move horizontally along the weed line spending at a depth of 5 to 8 feet below the surface. This movement typically happens in the evening near sunset. Under ideal weather conditions you can sometimes see crappie coming to the surface and feeding as far as 100 feet away from the edge of the weed line. Right before night fall is a great time to catch crappie with a flyrod and a floating crappie jig. This one of the few times that papermouth like to feed on the surface.

The crappies are often mentioned by local fisherman with names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth in many parts of the country is a very adaptable fish species. Right after the calico bass are done spawning they may be inactive for about 2 weeks regaining their strength from the strenuous spawn. They will still hit crappie baits while bait fishing but they will not chase artificial crappie baits during this time. During this period a good crappie live bait selection such as a crappie minnow, shiner, or a small crayfish might be a better crappie bait to use. You can fish these crappie live baits with a fixed or slip bobber crappie fishing rig. You may want to choose the slip bobber rig because it is easier to adjust your depth until you find the calico bass’s right depth and start catching crappie.

The white perch will move into the post spawn period after about two weeks. They will start to feed aggressively when they move into the post spawn period because they need build up new energy levels to match there increase activity levels as there metabolism increases. This is a great time to use multiple types of crappie baits to catch crappie.

During the post spawn period females will move to the edges of adjacent flats that are close to deep water, and in deeper lakes or reservoirs males will sometimes linger around shallow cover like brush piles and small weed clumps. A good way to go crappie fishing in these areas is by using crappie jigs tipped with live baits such as crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows or small crayfish. In shallow lakes these are primary areas that strawberry bass will head too. Many times in shallow lakes using crappie jigs with a plastic grub and tipped with a wax worm will catch crappie.

In deeper lakes and reservoirs strawberry bass will head for deep weed lines or a near drop off into deep water. It’s very common to find the suspended at about 5 to 15 feet deep. Many crappie anglers will drift fish or troll over these locations with multiple crappie fishing rigs that have crappie jigs with soft plastic grubs or curly tails set at different depths. Sometimes setting up a crappie pole or two, set up with a live crappie bait such as a crappie minnow, shiner, or a small crayfish works well too.

Once you start catching crappie consistently at a certain depth and crappie bait, change your other crappie poles to the same bait and re-fish the area until you stop catching crappie.

crappies all over their habitat range are called a lot of different names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass and papermouth. This fish species is a migrational by nature and tends to follow the natural forage. When you are bait fishing for crappie you need to take into account the seasonal habits and locations. In addition to selecting the crappie baits you need to understand where the speckled perch will be located during the season of the year you are crappie fishing.

To catch crappie while bait fishing it is not enough to just select a good crappie bait. You nee to understand the paper mouth’s diet and activity levels and behavior. Their is no set calendar for the changing seasons when you are targeting speckled bass. Actually the changing of the seasons is dicated by the needs of the calico bass. The changes of physical seasons forces the the paper mouth to change their habits because they will need to seek the type of habitat that allows them to still locate a good abundant food source.

The bottom line is that paper mouth change their habits, feeding patterns and location to seek out an abundant food source, and in many respects is the driving force of their annual migrations from one area to another. So you probably are smart folks and figured out already that you much change your crappie fishing techniques with the changing seasons too. You will be have to be making changes to your crappie bait and crappie fishing rig selections with the change of seasons when you are bait fishing for crappie.

We all wish we could change our crappie fishing style by looking at the calendar but unfortunately it just doesn’t work that way. The typical changes we see on land with the change of the seasons such as from winter to spring, from spring to summer, summer to fall , and fall to winter are not the same under the water. Under the water changes are dictated by the length of daylight which is known as the photo period. Animals from small microorganisms such as zooplankton all the way up to the fiercest of game fish react to these changes. The change in the length of daylight will cause papermouth to migrate, spawn, and to change their feeding habits.

There are a few crappie fishing calendars that can be purchased that identify specific details of what when and where for crappie fishing seasonal changes. The best one I have come across is published by in-Fisherman and is designed to identify seasonal changes based on the fishing activity levels and seasonal needs of the strawberry bass.

I want to thank you for reading my article about Papermouth. We wish you the best of luck on your next fishing trip!
