Not all rivers just like not all lakes hold crappie. Crappies all over their habitat range are called a lot of different names such as calico crappie, speckled perch, speckled bass white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and papermouth. Typically warm water river basins like the Mississippi will hold strawberry bass in their back water areas which can be quite expansive.

Typically you will catch crappie in river systems that are middle aged in geological terms. These rivers are slow flowing, shallow and have large flood planes that many times create large back water areas that are excellent white perch habitat areas to catch crappie. River systems from Minnesota to Louisiana that have back water areas will hold large populations of  white perch. You will find crappie in backwater areas that are out of current. papermouth will thrive in these areas if there is an abundant crappie food chain for forage. Head for brush piles, stump fields, deadfalls, and wood cover.

The average depth in many of these river back water areas is typically 5 to 6 ft so a flat bottom boat will work best to get to these areas. Because of the numerous stumps make sure you use a prop on your motor that is not stainless steel so you will shear your pin or just dent your prop if you hit a stump. This will save from loosing a lower end on your outboard motor.

There are many different crappie fishing baits that you can use to catch crappie in these areas. Threadfin shad and gizzard shad make excellent crappie live bait but they must be caught fresh while you are out fishing because they must be fished alive and they die quickly in captivity. Crappie minnows, flathead minnows, shiners, small crayfish will work well too. Crappie fishing jigs with soft plastic grubs tipped with live baits such as crappie minnows, wax works work well also. Or you can use a crappie jig with just a small crayfish.

You can also use crappie jigs with soft plastic grub imitations or a small crayfish Imitation also. To make these bait more inticing to the calico crappie you could tip them with wax worm to make the speckled bass Crappie crank baits will work well fished on the edge lines of brush stump fields, and weedlines. To fish your crappie jig setups use a small fixed or slip bobber that is easily adjusted for depth. To fish in the hard to get to brush and tree areas you will need a long crappie fishing rod. Also.

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

crappie are a most adaptable species of gamefish and fisherman all over the country call them different namessuch as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappies, strawberry bass, and papermouths. The water temperature during the pre-spawn period is typically between 50 degrees farenhieght to 63 degrees farenhieght. During the pre-spawn period pole crappies are changing their daily patterns getting ready for the upcoming spawning period.

During the pre-spawn period the crappie, calico bass are searching for good spawning grounds to have their young. They require a solft, but not to mucky bottom because the males will be sweeping out the nest from time to time. The soft bottom needs to be close to cover which could be stumps, fallen trees, brush piles, reeds, or stalks that are at the appropriate depth for spawning.

The proper depth for spawning is determined by the water clarity where the papermouths are located. The clearer the water the deeper paper mouths must go to spawn. In extremely clear lakes this may be at depths up to 20fett deep. In speckled perch waters that have average clarity, typically speckled bass spawn in depths of 3 to 6 feet. In mudy or murky waters the spawning depths may be only 2ft or less. The way the depth is determined is by how deep the light penetrates the most. Crappies will spawn right below that point. Light is required for the strawberry bass in the gestation period.

The best spawning locations for strawberry bass are typically bays , coves, and back water areas that have a gravel-sand, sand, sand marl, and sand-silt bottoms.

Female speckled perch will start the migration to the spawning locations when the water temperature reaches 50 degrees farenhight. And they will stay near the spawning areas. To catch these females during the pre-spawn period go bait fishing with crappie live baits such as crappie minnows and shiners, or small crayfish. To catch the male paper mouths you will have to fish deep cover close to the spawning areas during the pre-awn period. You can use crappie jigs and long crappie jigging poles to get into the deep cover. During the pre-spawning period papermouths will feed aggressively. If you can locate the crappie spawning areas during the pre-spawn period you will catch crappie while bait fishing using various crappie baits.

Well that concludes my article about Crappie Live Baits. We wish you the best of luck on your next fishing trip!

crappies all over their habitat range are called a lot of different names such as calico crappie, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappies, strawberry bass, and papermouths. When the water temperature starts to warm slightly above more the 50 degrees farenheight it is time to get your crappie live baits and other crappie baits ready for the upcoming spring season of crappie fishing.

Speckled Bass will start their annual migration from their coldwater locations to key new foraging locations. In the north this early spring period will sart right after ice out and actually the temperature of the water will be in the high 30’s. and the month of the year normally will be sometime in March to Early April. In the south, speckled bass move from deep water when the temperature rises above 40 degrees to coves, and back ends of creeks, about the end of February to the end of march.

During this early spring period pole crappies are hungry and ready to feed. Remember though the water is still cold so you need to work your crappie baits slowly. Some very good crappie live baits to use are crappie minnows, shiners, small creek chubs, small gizzard shad, small threadfin shad, and small crayfish. You can catch crappie at this time a year in the southern regions using crappie jigs and plastics or crappie jig, live bait combinations in broad feed creeks, where the water warms faster. Channel bends with stumps will often hold speckled perch at this time of year also.

Strawberry Bass in large lakes and reservoirs will stage and suspend over deep water 20 to 40 feet deep usually just beyond the first drop of leading into the shallow zones they will be using for their annual spawn. In most reservoirs the paper mouths will normally stage in creek arms so if you are going to be bait fishing for crappie in the early spring period you will want to use large crappie jigs to do your crappie fishing using large crappie minnows and shiners.

In small lakes and ponds calico bass will suspend over the deepest holes waiting to go to shallow water for the annual spawn. So an ideal way to catch crappie in these waters is by using a slip bobber crappie fishing rig  with a crappie jig head tipped with large crappie minnows and shiners. Also small crayfish will work. You will need to adjust your depth until you start catching crappie. The reason you want to use larger crappie live baits at this time of year is because you need to math the natural forage that the speckled perch is feeding on at this time of year. The pole crappies are feeding on what was left of the natural bait fish from
the previous year because the bait fish have not spawned yet so there will be no fry at this time of year.

Well that concludes my article about Papermouths. Have a great day!

Crappie are a most adaptable species of gamefish and fisherman all over the country call them different names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappies strawberry bass, and papermouths. During the post summer period of the year the underwater ecosystem is in complete reversal. The post summer ecosystem reversal is the complete opposite of the pre-summer period where the ecosystem is gearing up full speed.  The water temperature is cooling rapidly compared to the prime summer period and many things are changing daily including the papermouths mood, and feeding patterns.

Crappie fishing during the post summer period is often quite unpredictable. Sometimes crappie fishing baits you were using in the peak of the summer period such as crappie live baits like crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows, small crayfish, or mussel meat will work. Other times you may have to mix your crappie baits up with a combination crappie jigs and live bait or even crappie jigs and soft plastics tipped with live bait like wax worms or a small crappie minnow.

During the post summer period white perch are feeding on what is left of the forage that existed during the prime summer period. All of the papermouths food chain is in decline. Water levels are at their lowest point of the year drive the white perch to deeper areas of their habitats. The speckled bass will hold tight together in cover that is available in these deep areas. The crappies typically will not suspend during the post summer period. Locate some deep structure points and you probably will catch crappie. A good crappie fishing technique that works well in this period of the year is to use crappie jigs tipped with live bait with a safety pin spinner fished slowly. Go crappie fishing along the edges of deep weeded areas and deep timber lines. You will need to find the papermouths by fishing as many structure edge lines as you can find until you start catching crappie. The paper mouth will typically hole up in tight schools during the post summer period and if you can find these schools you can catch some crappie.

pole crappie

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

The crappie is a very plentiful game fish that goes by many different names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, stawberry bass and papermouth, Selecting the right crappie fishing reel to match your crappie rod is important to have a well balanced crappie fishing rig. There are three types of reels you can select from and all of them work in different situations. The three types you can choose from are the bait casting reel, the spinning reel, and the spin cast reel. Of the three crappie fishing reels the bait caster is the one you most likely will never use when you are crappie fishing because they are not suitable to fish with light test line and small crappie jigs. Papermouth it casters are only used in very special situations as crappie fishing rigs.

The most popular crappie reel is the spin cast reel because it is simple to use, but the spinning reel holds a very close second in popularity. The spin cast reel has a simple push button when you cast that releases the line. Spin cast reels are a good choice for beginning  speckled perch fisherman as a crappie fishing rig selection because they are a great reel when you are first learning to cast. But there are many veterans who prefer them over spinning reel because of the soft delivery that’s needed when fishing crappie live baits.

Stawberry bass spinning reels which are commonly referred to open faced reels, also make a good choice for any crappie fishing rigs. Spinning reels are excellent choice for crappie fishing because you use very light test line to fish 1/64oz crappie jigs very easy. However spinning or open face reels are not like the spin cast reel that operates with a push button. Spin cast reels operate by opening or closing what is called a bail. When the bail is released you hold the line so it doesn’t curl off the spool and then cast. Once you cast the bail will close when you turn the handle. Casting spinning reels takes a bit more practice, but is still a goos choice for a crappie fishing rig.

Here’s a few speckled bass fishing rig tips that may help you.

Tip#1 If you are using a papermouth spin cast reel and just can’t get your cast far enough to where the crappie are located, switch to a spinning ultralight reel. These reels release line quickly and farther.

Tip#2 Always get the drag on your paper mouth reel by pulling the line from the rod tip. For example get your self a large lure with multiple treble hooks and cast it out onto the grass in your back yard make it hook into the grass then reel tight and set your drag.
