As the water starts to cool in natural lakes much of the weed growth on the flats dies off. Some deep lying weeds will remain along the deep edge of weed growth along drop offs. After the weed growth dies off crappies holding in shallow flats will join crappie along drop off edges, so this is one of the locations you will want to target your crappie fishing efforts. Crappies holding in open water will also head for drop off edges. The the crappie is a very sought after species of fish which goes by many different names through out the country such as calico bass,speckled bass,speckled perch,white perch,pole crappie,strawberry bass, and paper mouth. Once the speckled perch have moved to drop off ledges normally they will continue to hold there or move to close by deeper rock cover if it is available. You can catch crappie by using crappie jigs tipped with live crappie baits such as crappie minnows,flathead minnows,shiners,and shad if they are there. Fish your crappie baits just vertical or horizontal to identified drop off edge locations or deep rock cover approximately 5 to 10 feet off bottom, white perch will typically hold at these depths during the late fall going into winter. In natural lakes you will find drop off edges in a variety of different crappie fishing locations. Look for edges there is remaining weed growth such as at locations inside bends in the lake. You will also find excellent drop off edges where there is combination of remaining weed growth and rock cover. Your prime crappie fishing locations to concentrate on in the fall season will be where there is remaining weed growth, and rock cover combined together and adjacent to a drop off into deeper water. You will normally find these locations along bends in the lake contour. Fall calico bass will be normally be feeding on plankton or crappie minnows or shad that are feeding on the plankton. A good fall crappie bait would be artifical crappie baits that resemble crappie minnows or shad or Live crappie baits such as crappie minnows,small shad,shiners, and fathead minnows. You can also use small crayfish when you are fishing off the bottom in rock cover. As the remaining weed beds die off calico bass will move to rock piles, humps, sloop points, that drop into the lake basin, and transitional points that go from a hard pan bottom to a soft mucky bottom. Concentrate your crappie fishing efforts after the weed die off to the areas just mentioned.

Flatland reservoirs water impoundments are a Mecca for catching crappie and just about any crappie baits will work if you know where to look. Crappies are often mentioned by local fisherman with names like calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, and papermouth. Many of the most famous papermouth lakes such as Barkley Lake, Kentucky Lake, and Santee-Cooper are flatland reservoirs. These bodies of water all have shallow basins that extend from the main river channel and they slowly move through farmland and low hills. These lakes also include arms that are former tributary creeks, that are fed only in the spring.
Flatland reservoirs are crappie hotspots because they are fertile, offer abundant vegetation which can cover 50% surface area. You will want to go crappie fishing on the edge of weeds, along flooded timber areas, brushy banks, and stumps.
In murky flatland reservoirs you can catch crappie in the brush and stump areas using crappie fishing jigs with plastic grubs, and plastic tubes tipped with wax worms. Some of the most popular crappie jigs plastics include Northland’s gum drop tube, Turner Jones micro jelly jig, Bailey’s crappie magnet, Turner Jones micromini jig, Southern Pro umbrella tube, Mizmo mini tube, Mizmo earth-tone tube (Mini Thunder Rattle) Berkley power micro tube, and Turner Jones micro shrimp. Some old reliable crappie lure baits that have proven the test of time are Rapala, Blue Fox, Bill Lewis (Rat-L-Trap), Storm, Rebel, and Lindy – Little Joe.
The crappie food base in flatland reservoirs is exceptionally abundant and all these areas hold large populations of speckled perch. The crappies are often mentioned by local fisherman with names such as calico bass, speckled perch, speckled bass, white perch, pole crappie, strawberry bass, and paper mouth in many parts of the country is a very adaptable fish species. Right after the calico bass are done spawning they may be inactive for about 2 weeks regaining their strength from the strenuous spawn. They will still hit crappie baits while bait fishing but they will not chase artificial crappie baits during this time. During the post spawn period females will move to the edges of adjacent flats that are close to deep water, and in deeper lakes or reservoirs males will sometimes linger around shallow cover like brush piles and small weed clumps. A good way to go crappie fishing in these areas is by using crappie jigs tipped with live baits such as crappie minnows, shiners, fathead minnows or small crayfish. In shallow lakes these are primary areas that strawberry bass will head too. Many times in shallow lakes using crappie jigs with a plastic grub and tipped with a wax worm will catch crappie.
In deeper lakes and reservoirs strawberry bass will head for deep weed lines or a near drop off into deep water. It’s very common to find the suspended at about 5 to 15 feet deep. Many crappie anglers will drift fish or troll over these locations with multiple crappie fishing rigs that have crappie jigs with soft plastic grubs or curly tails set at different depths. Sometimes setting up a crappie pole or two, set up with a live crappie bait such as a crappie minnow, shiner, or a small crayfish works well too.
Once you start catching crappie consistently at a certain depth and crappie bait, change your other crappie poles to the same bait and re-fish the area until you stop catching crappie.

In very clear lakes or reservoirs you will want to use crappie baits such as live crappie minnows, shiners, crayfish, or shad if they are native to your lake or reservoir, using ultralight crappie fishing tackle. You will want very thin dia test lines like 2 to 4lb test monofilament or 8lb braided fire line. You will need to use very small artificial crappie fishing baits like crappie jigs with plastic grubs and tubes. Some of the more popular crappie fishing jigs that work well are .
