Catfish eat a variety of different foods on a daily basis you may be surprised that catfish feed on such a large variety of foods. Here are a few examples of catfish bait we have identified that work for live bait presentations or dead cutbaits and prepared stink baits. Here a few examples of catfish bait that works well in different fishing situations, nightcrawlers, suckers, chubs, shiners, goldfish, shad, skipjack herring, bluegills, catalpa worms, grasshoppers, leopard frogs, bullfrogs as cutbait, waterdogs, adult salamanders, crayfish, saltwater shrimp, clams, and blood baits.
Actually a catfish’s daily diet is mainly live bait and consists of about 90% of there food intake daily. Probably because these foods are readily available in there food chain. It is a myth to think that catfish only consume dead cut baits,stink baits and blood baits although like i stated above these baits will work in certain fishing situations.
Catfish are aggressive night feeders and become extremely active at night. Some very large trophy catfish have been caught during the night hours. Don’t think that you have to go fishing for catfish only at night though. Catfish will bite during the day also but not as aggressively as at night. When the water temperature hits 70 degrees Fahrenheit you can expect some great catfish action during the day or night. This is the temperature that catfish prefer. The catfish bait we are going to talk about in this article will pertain only to channel catfish and blue catfish but some of these baits will work occasionally to catch flathead catfish also. Just to give you some insight, we want to discuss briefly the three main types of catfish.
The channel catfish is very common and has a range from the northern to southern united states. They are blueish gray in color and often have spots along the sides of their bodies. The tail has a deep fork, and the anal fin is shorter and rounder then the bluecat. The world record channel catfish weighed 58 pounds and was taken from the Santee-Cooper Reservoir in South Carolina, July 7, 1964. Channel catfish grow very slowly and a channel often takes over over 9 years to reach a weight over 5lbs. Channel catfish are very tasty and a 1 1/2lb to 3lb fish is excellent table fare. This catfish species will hit on live bait, or dead cutbait as well as prepared catfish bait and also blood catfish baits.
The record blue catfish was caught in may of 2005 in the Mississippi River and weighed in at 124 lbs. The blue catfish grows much faster then the channel catifsh and sizes in the 20lb range are not uncommon. Blue catfish love cut bait from large shiner minnows, sunfish, suckers, and carp, but blues will also hit on live baits as well. They also love blood baits and stink baits in special fishing situations. The blue catfish is typically a blueish gray color simalar to the channel catfish but without any spots. Also blue catfish has a much longer anal fin then the channel catfish.
The record flathead catfish was caught on may 14,1998 the weight was 123 lb 9 oz and the location was Elk City Reservoir, Kansas. The flathead can be caught in areas west of the Appalachian Mountains, in large rivers and their basins of the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio. Their range goes as far north as North Dakota, and as far west as Arizona, and south to the Gulf of Mexico including northeastern Mexico. Flathead catfish also go by other names such as the yellow cat, opelousas, and shovelhead cat.Yellow cat will eat manily live bait fish adn grow increadilby large. Infact in some areas of the south they are very unpopular because they can wipe out entire populations of bluegill and bream. Flatheads love to live in to hide in deep pools, in lakes,and large slow-moving rivers. The flathead catfish has a wide flat looking head very small eyes and are very brownish color. They have more of a square tail and their jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw.

Night fishing for catfish can be fast action and loads of fun! You would be amazed how active these fish get at night, but you need to know what live baits for catfish are the best at night. Catfish will eat just about any baits you throw at them but some live baits work better then others. I would like to identify the baits that work best for me when I am night fishing for catfish in my article today.
1.0 My number one favorite night fishing catfish bait is the chub.
Chubs make excellent bait for catfish and there are many types of chubs that are common in the United States. However the only type of chub I use for fishing for catfish is the creek chub. The creek chub is classified as a Cyprinidae, more commonly called minnows and carps. The creek chub is also commonly called the horned chub in many areas of the country. Creek chubs are normally 2 to 6 inches in length and are caught primarily in small creeks and rivers. Creek chubs or horned chubs have a thick body and a broad head. The best way to fish with chubs is to cut them in small pieces 2 to 3 inches in length and then put them on a 1/0 bait holding hook. Also when you are cutting your chubs into pieces save the fish guts in small plastic bags, they make excellent fishing chum.
2.0 My # 2 favorite night catfish bait is the bream.
Make sure you check with your states department of natural resources to make sure it is legal to fish with the bluegill. The bluegill is also common referred to as the sunfish, and bream. The blue gill is actually classified in the family of sunfish. If you want to catch larger catfish, I have found that the bluegill are the best bait to use. I always set up one heavy duty catfish rig with a blue gill for bait. The best size gills to use are small 3 to 4” in size. I will push a 4/0 bait holder hook just under the dorsal fin , so the blue can swim freely. I Use a slip bobber set so the blue gill can roam just off the bottom. You won’t catch a lot of catfish with blue gill but the ones you do catch will be of the large variety. I have caught many 10lb plus catfish using gills. You can also use them to catch smaller catfish cut up in strips just like fishing for chubs.
3.0 My #3 favorite catfish live bait is the gizzard shad.
When I use shad as a night fishing bait my preference is the threadfin shad because they are small and you can use the entire fish with a 1/0 bait holder hook. The threadfin shad is normally only 3 to 6 inches in length and a perfect size for fishing for catfish. The other shad I will use is called the gizzard shad. They are much larger in size normally 6 to 15inches in length and must be cut into to strips from 3 to 6 inches in length. For larger catfish you can use much larger strips to fit on a 4/0 bait holder hook. You can catch your own shad with a minnow seine, or you can purchase them from a local bait store.
