Trophy channel catfish over the size of 10lbs are considered rare and quite a catch. Amazingly some the most impressive monsters have come from the red river of the north in the Manitoba Canada basin. If your thinking logically you would think the largest giants of the channel catfish species would come from the southern region of the channel cat’s habitat, but that is not so. Habitat location doesn’t seem to make a difference when we talk about these trophy catfish specimens. It absolutely amazing that a 58lb channel catfish holds the world record. The monster of a channel catfish was caught in 1964 by W.B. Whaley. His catch was well documented and never has been discredited. Now this fish did come from a reservoir called Lake Marion in South Carolina, but no large monsters even close to this size have been caught since.
If you are wondering why this fish grew so big we can speculate that three factors drove it’s growth, but this only pure speculation. During the late 1950’s and into the 1960’s there was serious flooding of river delta system in this area. This generated a very unusual growth and population of forage fish such as shad and skip jack herring that migrated into Lake Marion. This fish had an over abundance of food to eat for many years.. Also there was no competition from flat head catfish or blue catfish at that time. Since then both have been introduced to the area, and no monster channel catfish of even close to this size have been caught since. That is factor number two, competition for the food source from other game fish.
Normally channel catfish have a internal growth mechanism built into their metabolism that determines how large they will grow. Prime natural habitat for channel catfish would be in small to medium rivers that have a overabundance of bait fish and where they had very little competition from other predators such as blue catfish and flathead catfish, and other large game fish. Normally in theory ,if these habitat conditions are present no mater where the location is within the channel catfish’s habitat range there’s a good chance that very large channel catfish will be caught.
For example I live by a very large shallow lake in ohio that has had an over abundance of gizzard shad for years. The lake is exceptional for channel catfish and catches over 4lbs are a very common occurrence. Although they are uncommon there are catches of trophy size channel catfish over 10lbs every year. I personally have caught five 10lb plus catfish using various catfish baits and catfish live bait rigs. from this lake. My biggest be 12lbs + caught just this year in august. This lake is 10 miles long and 2 miles wide and there is an amazing amount of cover. It is fed by two creeks. There are no blue catfish in this lake and a very small population of flathead catfish. So there is little competition for the shad. They did however introduce walleye into the lake about 8 years ago so the verdict is out on what it will do to the growth of very large channel catfish. But I know in my gut there is a channel cat out there in the 20 to 30lb range. One of these days I will catch one of these monsters using my special catfish baits.

Catfish eat a variety of different foods on a daily basis you may be surprised that catfish feed on such a large variety of foods. Actually a catfish’s daily diet is mainly live bait and consists of about 90% of there food intake daily. Probably because these foods are readily available in there food chain. It is a myth to think that catfish only consume dead cut baits,stink baits and blood baits although like i stated above these baits will work in certain fishing situations.
Catfish are aggressive night feeders and become extremely active at night. Some very large trophy catfish have been caught during the night hours. Don’t think that you have to go fishing for catfish only at night though. Catfish will bite during the day also but not as aggressively as at night. When the water temperature hits 70 degrees Fahrenheit you can expect some great catfish action during the day or night. This is the temperature that catfish prefer. The catfish bait we are going to talk about in this article will pertain only to channel catfish and blue catfish but some of these baits will work occasionally to catch flathead catfish also. Just to give you some insight, we want to discuss briefly the three main types of catfish.
The channel catfish is very common and has a range from the northern to southern united states. They are blueish gray in color and often have spots along the sides of their bodies. The tail has a deep fork, and the anal fin is shorter and rounder then the bluecat. The world record channel catfish weighed 58 pounds and was taken from the Santee-Cooper Reservoir in South Carolina, July 7, 1964. Channel catfish grow very slowly and a channel often takes over over 9 years to reach a weight over 5lbs. Channel catfish are very tasty and a 1 1/2lb to 3lb fish is excellent table fare. This catfish species will hit on live bait, or dead cutbait as well as prepared catfish bait and also blood catfish baits.
The record blue catfish was caught in may of 2005 in the Mississippi River and weighed in at 124 lbs. The blue catfish grows much faster then the channel catifsh and sizes in the 20lb range are not uncommon. Blue catfish love cut bait from large shiner minnows, sunfish, suckers, and carp, but blues will also hit on live baits as well. They also love blood baits and stink baits in special fishing situations. The blue catfish is typically a blueish gray color simalar to the channel catfish but without any spots. Also blue catfish has a much longer anal fin then the channel catfish.
The record flathead catfish was caught on may 14,1998 the weight was 123 lb 9 oz and the location was Elk City Reservoir, Kansas. The flathead can be caught in areas west of the Appalachian Mountains, in large rivers and their basins of the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio. Their range goes as far north as North Dakota, and as far west as Arizona, and south to the Gulf of Mexico including northeastern Mexico. Flathead catfish also go by other names such as the yellow cat, opelousas, and shovelhead cat.Yellow cat will eat manily live bait fish adn grow increadilby large. Infact in some areas of the south they are very unpopular because they can wipe out entire populations of bluegill and bream. Flatheads love to live in to hide in deep pools, in lakes,and large slow-moving rivers. The flathead catfish has a wide flat looking head very small eyes and are very brownish color. They have more of a square tail and their jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw.

There are many catfish anglers that think the best catfish bait to use to catch channel catfish and blue catfish are blood catfish baits. Blood baits are known to work exceptionally well for these two species of cats especially when you drag or bounce them off the bottom to get the fresh sent of blood flowing through currents. If there is no current you can cast your blood catfish bait out numerous times and drag it along the bottom to attract the catfish to your area.
How to make blood catfish bait:
Step 1
The first thing you want to do is find out where the closest slaughter house is to you and contact them. All you will need is enough fresh beef blood or chicken blood it makes no difference, to fill a large baking pan just below the top of the pan.
Step 2
Let the pan sit in the refrigerator until the blood bait mass feels almost like a rubber surface. This may take up to 5 to 7 days time.
Step 3
Now comes the easy part for you. Take your blood bait pan out of the refrigerator on a very hot and sunny day. elevate it above the ground so no critters can get into it. Let your blood bait pan sit in the sun all day until the top of the blood surface gets a hard surface. Next you will want to cut the pan into 2 inch squares and fill small plastic bags with no more then 3 squares each. The last thing you then want to do is put your plastic bags back into the refrigerator until you are ready to use them for catfish bait at a later date.
How to hook blood catfish bait:
Step 1
Cut off about 12 inches of fishing line and tie a number 1 to 2/0 treble hook to one end of the line. On the other end of the line tie a large barrel swivel.
Step 2
Get your self some pipe cleaners and skin the fuzz all the way off. Now you want to take one end of the wire and bent it up like a hook and place the hook in the open eye of the barrel swivel.
Step 3
Take One Of the 2 inch square pieces of blood catfish bait and pierce a hole in it with the strait end of the light gauge wire. Next pull the wire and the leader through the hole you pierced and impale the treble hook into the blood bait.
